NAIROBI, Kenya-The seventh and final leg of Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) National League heads to Eldama Ravine, Baringo County on Friday.

This leg will provide the stage for teams to qualify for the national play-offs scheduled for Makande Gymnasium in Mombasa on December 1 to 3.

Since the play-off slots are only reserved for the top four teams for both men and women, a staunch battle is expected as top sides jostle to book a berth.

“Going by the intense rivalry we have seen in the previous legs, we expect fireworks and upsets in Baringo. Teams have prepared well and are all tuned for the tournament,” KVF President Waithaka Kioni told SportPesa News.

Kioni explained that the leg will be a two-in-one event; acting as a league contest and tournament competition.

“The league contest will be held on Friday and will involve 16 teams for men and eight for women. Top four in both standings will qualify for the play-off.

“After the Friday league contest, the teams will then be involved in a two-day tournament scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the same venue which will be contested by 50 registered teams from across the country that have registered,” said Kioni.

Prisons top

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) will open the league fixtures on Friday against Kenya Defence Forces in the men’s division as the seventh-ranked (16 points) comes up against the fourth (23) placed team.

The dockers, who are eying a play-off berth, have three other matches against Vihiga County, Kenya Prisons and Mount Kenya University (MKU).

General Service Unit (GSU), who are leading the men’s log with 31 from 11 matches, will take on closest challengers; Co-op Bank (27) who have played a game less in a highlight clash. Co-op Bank and GSU are almost assured of play-off slots going by their points and positions in the standings.

To book a slot in the play-offs, KDF must beat KPA and hope to retain the position.

Mombasa Prison with 18 points are in fifth position. They will host MKU even though their chances of qualifying for the play-off are slim.

In the women’s category, Kenya Prison tops the league with 18 points followed by Kenya Commercial Bank with 13 points, Kenya Pipeline (12) Nairobi Water (11), Western Bombers (3) and MKU (0).

This is the fourth time that Eldama Ravine will be hosting the national volleyball league and tournament.
