NAIROBI, Kenya-Mombasa Island Cargo Terminal(MICT) are the winners of the 2017 Davis Cup Polo Tournament that concluded at the Nairobi Polo Club in Jamhuri on Sunday.

MICT thrashed Samsung 6-3.5 to lift the trophy of the tournament that is in its 39th edition. MICT were steered to victory by Nairobi Polo Club chairman, Phillip Arungah who scored four goals to secure the trophy home.

Arungah’s son, Omwakwe, added a brace to seal the deserved win for inspired MICT.

Samsung’s scorers included Phillipa Marian, Mike du Toit and Jadini Nzomo.Samsung had started the final with a fraction advantage.

On their way to the charged final, Samsung beat Space & Style 7-4 while MICT thrashed R.J Polo 9-2.

“We are grateful for the victory, we won as a team, we played as a unit, we are hopeful to win the other forthcoming tournament this weekend,” said Natasha Tisminiesky of MICT who jetted in from an international tournament in Argentina.

Omwakwe was voted the Most Valuable Player(MVP) following his goal scoring skills that steered MICT to the final.

“I attribute this good run to my father who has given me great opportunity to play polo, I will forever be indebted to him.” Omwakwe said.

Raphael Nzomo’s led Samurai, who were defending the trophy, were not lucky this year as they lost 5-3 in their rematch with Royal Salute in the subsidiary category.

Dom Grammaticus notched a brace for Royal Salute as Stichbury duo of Lochie, Harry and Rowena added a goal each to crown the win.

Raphael scored a brace for Samurai as Magda Jurkowieka added the third in the losing effort.

Samurai had edged Royal Salute 5-4 in their first encounter on Saturday but the margin win was not enough to propel them to the final, forcing them to settle for subsidiary contest.

New ponies

R.J Polo had a field day as they pounded Space & Style 5-1. The marksman of the match was Louis Roumeguere who notched four goals in the run as Izzy Stichbury added the fifth. Space &Style’s solitary goal was scored by Lorenzo Soriano.

“I’m happy with the turn out in this tournament. The level of contest was also surprising because we are currently off-season,” Raphael said.

“Most upcoming players used the opportunity to gain experience ahead of next season which is expected to be competitive.

“It was also a great opportunity for clubs to introduce their new ponies to the game as they school them ahead of forthcoming international tournaments,” Raphael added.

Raphael urged clubs and players to register for the Maria Bencivenga Cup to be staged at the venue this coming weekend.
