NAIROBI, Kenya- Issa Abdulla Hemed Mohamed is out to make his dream come true in his second attempt at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia on April 4 to 15.

The 23-year-old will attempt to go past the semi-final stage he reached in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland in his swimming categories.

The law student at Plymouth University in the United Kingdom will be donning Kenyan colors in the men’s 50m butterfly and freestyle.

“My qualification for the games still feels surreal. It’s always an honour to represent my country internationally,” he underlined.

Mohamed’s objective in Gold Coast is to swim a life time best, enjoy himself and learn a few lessons that can take his career to a new level.

“My plan is to go beyond my achievements in the last Club Games. Even though I was not lucky to win a medal, I’m glad I came out with an improved record,” he stated.

Mohamed has a long term plan which is to qualify for 2024 Paris Olympics. To him, being an Olympian will make him retire with a smile on his face at the same time add icing to the cake in all his swimming accomplishments.

Juggling careers

Mohamed, who will be graduating from the university this summer, admits being able to balance between training and studies is one of his greatest challenge.

“I have learnt to juggle both. Paying attention to detail is where the improvement lies.

“This has helped me to attain several accolades. I’m hoping for more to come” he said.

Mohamed started swimming at an early age of three after being introduced to the game by his father.

My dad is my role model, I believe he is probably the world’s best athlete who never got the chance and still achieved a lot,” Mohamed emphasized.
