Is Spain and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique on the way to England?
Having been left out of Barcelona’s squad completely for the surprise home defeat to Celta Vigo on Saturday night, Luis Enrique left Gerard Pique on the bench for the entire 90 minutes against Ajax on Wednesday.
Instead, Luis Enrique played Javier Mascherano (a terrific player, but nominally a central midfielder) and Marc Bartra, the young Spaniard in the centre of defence.
Barcelona kept a clean sheet in the 2-0 win in Amsterdam and now speculation is rife that Pique could be heading to the Premier League in January with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal interested.
The Daily Mail have stoked up the gossip mongers today with a report that Manchester United and Arsenal are keeping tabs on Pique with a view to a January move.
It is fair to say, after fairly underwhelming starts to the campaign, that both Manchester United and Arsenal would be improved by adding Pique to their ranks.
Whether Pique’s wife Shakira is keen on a move to England remains to be seen whilst the Spanish defender has a strong affinity with Barcelona and has on many occasions said he would like to be president of the Catalan club in the future.
Manchester United may well have the edge over Arsenal for Pique since he played at Old Trafford as a youngster before re-joining Barcelona and has also played under Louis van Gaal
