NAIROBI, Kenya- The second round of matches in the 2018 Kenya Premier League (KPL) took place over the weekend with a total of 15 goals being scored from the seven matches.
Defending champions Gor Mahia FC and 2017 GoTv Shield Cup champions AFC Leopards SC were missing in action as they were battling it out against Leones Vegeteranios and Fosa Juniors respectively in the CAF Champions League.
Their matches against Zoo FC and newcomers Wazito FC are scheduled to be played on Thursday 15 February.
Here’s the SportPesa News Team of the Week:
The hero in Kenya’s recent CECAFA victory, Patrick Matasi, was at his best again over the weekend in Posta Rangers barren draw against 2016 champions Tusker FC.
Matasi made a string of good saves in the opening 10 minutes and early in the second half to ensure they remain unbeaten against the brewers in their last three encounters.
Kevin Oluoch of Sony Sugar FC played an integral role as the sugar millers defended superbly to keep out a series of Ulinzi Stars attacks, holding out for a 1-0 victory at their home ground in Awendo.
Another stand-out player over the weekend was Tusker FC defender Erick Ambunya who showed why he was brought into the squad as his aerial ability and pace helped the brewers keep a clean sheet against a persistent Rangers side.
As Bandari FC and Chemelil Sugar FC played out to the other barren draw in the KPL weekend, Felly Mulumba was undoubtedly the star performer in the dockers defense. Two crucial interceptions and his mental capability to remain calm under pressure proved to be very important as both teams grabbed a point form the cagey encounter.
The last defender in the team of the week, also from the same match is Yussuf Juma of Chemelil Sugar FC. He had a very good game and his commanding nature was key in keeping his teammates in check throughout the encounter.
Andrew Murunga of newly-promoted Vihiga United FC deservedly makes it into the team of the week as the speedy midfielder managed to score a brace in his side’s 2-2 draw against Kariobangi Sharks FC on Saturday.
League leaders Mathare United FC came from behind for the second game in a row to beat Nzoia Sugar FC 2-1 with Chrispinus Oduor bagging the goal that set the slum boys on their way to their second successive victory in the 2018 KPL season.
In the most thrilling encounter of the weekend, Nakumatt FC came from a 3-1 deficit to draw 3-3 with Thika United FC in a six-goal thriller. Clement Mata was the standout performer for the milkmen as he scored twice ensuring Thika grab a point from the fixture played on Saturday at the Ruaraka Grounds.
Despite not being able to get on the score-sheet for Bandari FC, David King’atua had an outstanding game as they shared the spoils against a determined Chemelil Sugar FC. King’atua had three shots on goal and created a couple of other chances as the dockers searched for the breakthrough and his efforts see him break into the team of the week.
Following the departure of 2017 Golden Boot winner Masoud Juma, Kariobangi Sharks FC turned their hopes to lanky forward Ebrimmah Sanneh who proved his worth by grabbing a goal in the 2-2 draw against newly-promoted Vihiga. Sanneh had a couple of other chances to put his team ahead, thought the opponents defense was resolute enough to keep him out.
Sofapaka FC needed a win to bounce back from their disappointing 3-0 loss to Bandari in the opening round and they had to wait until substitute Elli Asieche came off the bench to score, securing an important 1-0 win over Kakamega Homeboyz FC at the Mumias Sports Complex.
