NAIROBI, Kenya- With Gor Mahia FC out of domestic action this past weekend, Mathare United FC retained the lead in the Kenya Premier League (KPL) despite stumbling to a 2-1 loss at the hands of Posta Rangers FC on Sunday.
A total of 14 goals were scored during match-day 11 of the KPL with five games failing to produce winners as they ended in draws.
From the weekend’s matches, SportPesa News has a look at the top performers in the round 11 team of the week.
The custodian in the team of the week is none other than Sofapaka’s Mathias Kigonya. The goalkeeper stepped up and converted his fourth goal of the 2018 campaign from the penalty spot and helped his side hang on for a 1-1 draw against Sony Sugar FC in the last game of the weekend.
Zoo FC captain Jackson Ligare is the first defender in the team as his leadership qualities, goal-line clearance and equalizing goal ensured his side grabbed a point in their 2-2 draw with AFC Leopards SC.
Ex-Sofapaka defender Eugene Asike also showed astute defending capabilities, literally throwing himself in front of the ball and into challenges throughout the match and could be the main reason that Tusker FC didn’t concede a goal.
Veteran defender Jockins Atudo was integral in Posta Rangers FC victory over league leaders Mathare. Other than the fact that he was quick to intercept on more than one occassion, he was also on target as Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo’s charges romped to a 2-1 win.
Dennis Ombeva of Vihiga United FC is the final defender in the team of the week. Ombeva frustrated the Tusker attackers with his ability to read and dictate the game in the defence, he was also very involved in his team’s attacks whenever the opportunity arose enabling his side to force a stalemate between the two sides.
Almost all of Posta’s efforts to find a goal against Mathare can be credited to midfield sensation John Nairuka. A constant threat going forward throughout the game, Nairuka’s efforts were rewarded early in the first half as he provided the assist for Atudo’s headed goal.
Former Muhoroni and Leopards winger, Samuel Ndung’u makes a maiden appearance into the SportPesa News team of the week. Although his side went down to Rangers, Ndung’u gave Posta keeper Patrick Matasi a hard time, testing him with continuous efforts that he was equal to.
Whyvonne Isuza has been a key player for Ingwe this season both running the midfield and scoring very important goals since Dennis Kitambi took over as interim coach. Isuza’s passing and movement on and off the ball were exemplary and he also got his name on the score-sheet in the 2-2 draw with Zoo FC.
Nzoia Sugar FC continued with their impressive run of performances in the KPL with a very impressive 1-0 victory over Bandari FC on Sunday at the Sudi Stadium, Bungoma. In the absence of top scorer and injured striker Elvis Rupia, Nzoia had Victor Omondi to thank for the all-important goal.
Collins Neto was arguably the best performer from all the forwards that featured over the weekend with his brace inspiring Chemelil Sugar FC to a 3-1 victory over Wazito FC.
AFC Leopards forward Ezekiel Odera scored his fourth goal of the campaign and dedicated it to his late mother and is the final inclusion in the SportPesa News team of the week.
