NAIROBI, Kenya- Match-day eight in the Kenya Premier League (KPL) saw 19 goals scored throughout the long Easter weekend with no teams sharing the spoils as every game produced a winner.
Mathare United FC went top on Good Friday after registering a 1-0 victory over Chemelil Sugar FC but their stay at the summit lasted only a day when champions Gor Mahia FC went two points clear with a similar victory over KPL newcomers Vihiga United FC.
Here we have a look at the top performers of the weekend in the SportPesa News Team of the Week:
Sofapaka FC’s Mathias Kigonya was once again the standout custodian when his side beat retailers Nakumatt FC 2-0 with the goalkeeper stepping up to convert his third goal of the campaign from the penalty spot.
The first defender in the team of the week is Tusker FC defender Lloyd Wahome. The lanky defender did incredibly well to steal the show in his side’s game against AFC Leopards SC, scoring a brace as the brewers cruised to a 4-2 victory to atone for giving away a spot-kick in the first half.
Mathare continued their stellar start to the 2018 KPL campaign with the victory over the sugar millers and the assist for the winning goal came from defender Martin Ongori. Besides his crucial contribution upfront, his speed and tackling contributed to the 2008 champion’s success.
Ulinzi Stars FC defender Brian Birgen also makes it to the team of the week after setting up the only goal of the game with a brilliant pass to teammate Nandwa in the 67th minute.
Veteran Jockins Atudo had a man of the match performance in Posta Rangers FC 3-1 comeback victory over Thika United FC on Saturday. His resolute defending was key in keeping the Thika attack out and helping his side hold on to the precious lead for their second win of the season.
Yet another Mathare player makes it into the team of the week and this time it’s midfield sensation, Cliff Nyakeya, who is making quite a name for himself with starring performances for the slum boys, the latest being scoring the winner against Chemelil.
Kennedy Otieno came back to haunt his former employers, Thika, as he bagged a brace to help Posta in a match the pacy winger proved to be a headache for the opposition’s defense who struggled to contain him throughout the encounter.
Despite their four-match winning streak coming to an end, AFC Leopards SC midfielder Whyvonne Isuza‘s relentless work to haul 10-man Ingwe back into the game were commendable. His efforts were rewarded with a goal in the second half.
Former Gor attacker, Timothy Otieno, is the first forward in the team of the week after excellently poaching a brace in their big clash against Leopards.
Fresh off international duty with the Francis Kimanzi-led U23 Emerging Stars, Wazito FC striker, Pistone Mutamba picked up where he left off when his double fired his side to a smash and grabe 2-0 victory over Zoo Kericho FC at the Kericho Green Stadium.
Dylan Kerr’s charges returned to domestic duty with a point to prove and had Rwandese forward, Jacques Tuyisenge, to thank as his second half goal was enough to down stubborn Vihiga.
