NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) ladies crushed rivals Kenya Defence Forces 3-0 during the Kenya Volleyball Federations tournament finals in Bungoma on Sunday.

The bankers won the first set on tiebreak 27-25 before dominating the second and third 25-14 and 25-18 to clinch victory.

Head coach, Vernon Khayinga, pulled off a surprise in fielding new signing Egline Kulova who aided their winning cause by firing unstoppable serves in the latter stages of the contest to extinguish any hopes KDF had of salvaging the tie.

“It feels good to know that we were able to put all that practice for the last three months into the Bungoma outing and that we were able to get a win in the finals.

“The new players were brilliant as we worked hard to ensure that the KDF team lost power heading into the second set,” he added.

Closely contested

After a closely contested opening set, the bankers mounted rigid blocks and backcourt defence to nullify the soldiers to close out a victory that will boost their bid to challenge the duopoly enjoyed by national champions, Kenya Pipeline and Kenya Prisons.

KCB punched their ticket to the finals by handing Bungoma County another 3-0 beating in a rain-interrupted contest.

The bankers came from behind to win the first set before dominating the remaining two inspired by the attacking performance of Phosca Kasisi in a match that was stopped in the third due to heavy downpour.

KCB resume training on April 3 ahead of the second KVF Tournament scheduled from April 20 to 22.

Prisons won bronze at the recent CAVB African Volleyball Club Championships in Cairo, Egypt after stopping their domestic arch rivals Pipeline in the third-placed play-off.
