Kenya Commercial Bank have stepped down as title sponsors of the Kenya National Rally Championship as well as the Safari Rally.
At the same time, the Kenya Motor Sport Federation announced that Kenya could host the World Rally Championships in 2018 if it fulfills certain requirements set by world governing body FIA.
Speaking to sportpesanews, KCB Marketing and Communications Director Angela Mwirigi said that they will remain partners with the national rally and other motorsport disciplines.
“We have been with KMSF for the last 13 years and during that period, we have created a powerful brand. We have therefore decided to change from being title sponsors to allow space for other corporates to get into partnership with the federation.
“We shall however remain as the official banning partners of the rally, and we shall now focus on growing the other events on the KMSF calendar such as autocross. We are working out details of a new arrangement with KMSF and we will be informing you in due course,” she said.
KCB took over the rally sponsorship in 2003 as supporters of two successive safaris in the Coast, before coming on board as title sponsors of the KNRC series in 2005.
This season, drivers Tapio Lakunnen, Baldev Chagar and Jaspreet Chatthe have won the first three legs of the KNRC championships that were held in Kajiado, Kisumu and Elementaita respectively.
The fourth leg of the competitions was to be held in Taita Taveta during Easter but was postponed to July 4 due to in house wrangling. The next leg of the Kenya National Rally Championship will be held in Voi on July 4.
