NAIROBI, Kenya-SportPesa Premier League (SPL) side Kakamega Homeboyz FC has penned a partnership deal with the regional government it hails from on Tuesday for the 2018 season.

The self-supporting team got the boost after recording their highest ever finish in the top-flight upon their return to the SPL when they finished fifth in the 18-team competition on 50 points.

Club chairman, Cleophas ‘Toto’ Shimanyula confirmed the club had signed an agreement with County Governor, Wycliffe Oparanya, that will see the community team fly the Kakamega flag in the 2018 SPL.

Kakamega will be the second team from the Western region in the SPL to be backed by a regional government following the promotion of 2017 National Super League winners, Vihiga United FC.

“The Governor has promised to support us as from next season because we are the only community club from this county. It is 60 percent done and we are just waiting for the finer details of the sponsorship to be finalised so that we can know how much to expect from them.

“It is a good gesture because I have been supporting the club single handedly. This will come as a big reprieve. We have been working on a shoe-string budget but now we will be able to pay our players and staff well,” Shimanyula told SportPesa News.

As part of the agreement, Homeboyz will now move their home matches to the new look Bukhungu Stadium that has been a welcome facility in the country that is hosting the 2017 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup matches.

Football cathedral

Shimanyula is keen on making the football cathedral of Western a fortress next season as they seek to challenge the big boys for the SPL title.

“Our home matches will now be played in Bukhungu. We want to make Kakamega great again. We have already embarked on strengthening our squad because we want to finish in a better position. We have been performing fairly well with financial challenges and now that we have finances we want to improve further.

“Our target is to finish better than position five next season and even challenge for the title. It is possible to do so now,” added the business man.

Governor Oparanya is set to make the official announcement on December 12 when Kakamega host AFC Leopards SC at Bukhungu in the official opening ceremony of the refurbished stadium.
