After a week of intensive training, national women football team the Harambee Starlets’ coach David Ouma has settled on a squad of 18 players for his match against Botswana over the weekend.
The team which has been in residential training at Kasarani since Thursday May 14th will be facing Botswana on Friday May 22nd for the 2016 Olympic Qualifiers.
The Starlets played a build up match against Gaspo Youth and won 4-0 but fell 3-1 to Baba Dogo United U 17 boys in another friendly match.
Despite the impressive play Ouma was reluctant to show his excitement at the performance saying that improvement will only be proved by scaling up the FIFA rankings.
“Kenya is 138th in the FIFA rankings on women and until we go to a better position, I will keep working to improve the level of our girls’ play and make it international,” said Ouma.
The coach is looking to polish the technical ability and fitness of the players. His observation is that despite having participated in the FKF Premier League, the levels are still surprisingly low.
. Most of the players have been selected from the just concluded FKF Premier League which had been running since June 2015. The team departs for Labotse City, Botswana on Wednesday May 20th evening.
