Sofapaka and AFC Leopards emerged tops in the last two matches in the quarter finals of the GOtv Shield tournament played on Sunday at the Nairobi City Stadium on Sunday 28 September to set up a repeat of the 2013 semi final where AFC Leopards emerged 2 – 0 winners.
Sofapaka were taking on National Super League (NSL) minnows Administration Police FC and there was no surprise as the 2009 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions raced to a 15th minute lead through veteran striker John Baraza who also netted a second goal on 39 minutes before Collins Shivachi added a third on 64 minutes.
Robert Jagero, however, came from the bench to score on the 80th minute to see the clash end 3 – 1.
In the last quarter final match, AFC Leopards came from two goals down to beat Tusker 3 – 2 in a great show of spirit in the second half. Jesse Were scored two quick first half goals to see the Brewers go to the break with a comfortable lead.
Ingwe, however, turned the game in their favor when they won a 63rd minute penalty of Lloyd Wahome’s handball and Ikenna Austin stepped forward to take the resultant kick, sending Samuel Odhiambo the wrong way.
AFC Leopards continued pressing for an equalizer and their efforts paid off handsomely on the 83rd minute when a long punt forward by goalkeeper Patrick Matasi was headed by Lloyd Wahome into his own net as he tried to clear under pressure.
Even before Tusker recovered from the own goal, Humphrey Mieno stumbled on a loose ball 25 yards from goal and his speculative shot on goal caught Samuel Odhiambo off his line and unawares to hit the net for the third goal.
Leopards and Sofapaka join two NSL sides West Kenya Sugar and Posta Rangers FC who qualified for the semis on Saturday.
