NAIROBI, Kenya- Fresh from retaining the hotly contested SportPesa Super Cup, Gor Mahia FC resume domestic duty on Wednesday against SportPesa Premier League (SPL) first timers Wazito FC at 3PM at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu.
Gor, who caged Tanzania’s Simba FC 2-0 to set up a second fixture against English Premier League side Everton FC at their Goodison Park Stadium, remain unbeaten on top of the 18-team log with second-placed Mathare FC two points adrift despite playing more games.
The match that was postponed due to Gor’s involvement in the CAF Confederation Cup, will be their 15th match whilst their opponents Wazito have played 19 games so far.
Nevertheless, Gor Mahia head coach, Dyaln Kerr who dedicated the SportPesa Super Cup triumph to the loyal Green Army fans who always make time to watch their favorite team play saying focus now shifts to the league where the British tactician plans on taking it one game at a time.
“I am very grateful for the thousands of fans who always show up to support us no matter where we are playing, this trophy is for you.
“Now we return to league duty and we wish to continue our fine form as we take it one game at a time,” Kerr told SportPesa News.
Wazito are a point above bottom side, Zoo FC with 17 points and announced the signing of four players to bolster their SPL survival after hardworking Piston Mutamba and winger Joe Waithera swapped jerseys for Sofapaka FC and Nakumatt FC respectively.
Youngsters Anthony Njeru and Zedrick Imbosa penned three-year contracts respectively with the league debutantes with Edwin Wanjala and Eric Ochieng’ joining in on year-long respective contracts.
Edwin Wanjala came in from Kangemi United FC, having previously played for Nakumatt FC and Gor Mahia as an attacking mid-fielder.
Veteran mid-fielder Eric Ochieng’ (3-time SPL winner with Gor) brings with him a vast field of experience in a holding role also joining in from the bankers with previous experience from Sofapaka FC and Bandari FC.
Despite awaiting their second Group D CAF Confederations Cup tie against Tanzanias Yanga FC, Gor are also scheduled to participate in CECAFA Kagame Cup from June to July 13 in Tanzania.
Seventh-place AFC Leopards, who were knocked out of the Super Cup in the quarters, also resume league duty with a tricky fixture against Sofapaka FC who sit pretty in third.
Another team that featured in the second edition of the Super Cup, Kariobangi Sharks will have the chance to move up the table if they can recollect themselves for a victory over their midweek opponents Nzoia Sugar FC.
Sharks (8) have 24 points while Nzoia (5) are on 27 and will be counting on the SPL top scorer Elvis Rupia to be back among the goals when the two teams lock horns on Wednesday afternoon.
