NAIROBI, Kenya- Simon Cherono was on Wednesday declared the inaugural winner of the StarTimes Sports Personality of the Month Award for his outstanding performance at the 2017 Deaflympics Games in Samsun, Turkey.

Cherono won two gold medals in the 5000m and 10000m and scooped bronze in the 1500m in an impressive all-round performance at the illustrious championships.

His reputable display enabled him to beat four other nominees and claim the cash prize of KSh100, 000 as well as a 40-inch flat screen television courtesy of the event partner, StarTimes.

Cherono beat fellow Deaflympian Daniel Kiptum, Kenya Simbas skipper Darwin Mukidza and teenage runners Gloria Mulei and Dominic Samson.

A panel from the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) voted for Cherono as the first ever recipient of the latest local awards.

Apart from footballers, whose efforts are catered for by the SportPesa Player of the Month Award, SJAK President Chris Mbaisi declared that this award will be gifted to all other deserving sports personalities.

Improving welfare

“The award is aimed at improving the welfare of our sports personalities countrywide and I wish to challenge all to improve and display the highest standards possible,” said Mbaisi.

“This monthly award to our sports fraternity will progressively present a very strategic way to further stamp StarTimes efforts to appreciate excellence in the sporting world,” StarTimes Director of Marketing and PR, Japheth Akhulia, added.

The award is a partnership with SJAK to reward all sports personalities on a monthly basis in a bid to boost the general performance in the sporting world.
