ASTON Villa boss Paul Lambert heaped praise on Fabian Delph’s England bow on Monday night and says contract talks “will happen pretty soon”.

Speaking to the media ahead of Saturday’s trip to Anfield, Lambert was asked about the impact the midfielder had on England’s impressive 2-0 victory over Switzerland.

He said: “I thought he grew into the game and was excellent. As the game went on he was great and if you perform like that, and when the squad next gets announced, hopefully he’ll be back in it.

“He’s been playing well for me for the last few years. The way he played was not something surprising and I knew he wouldn’t let anyone down.”

Delph, 24, is out of contract in the summer and Lambert suggests contract talks are imminent to extend his current deal.

“There’s a few that we’re trying to get around,” said Lambert. “Fabian, I’ve spoken to early doors and we’ll see how it goes. We’ve just got a new chief executive involved which will certainly help. I’m pretty sure we’ll sit down.

“I’m not worried. When players get into their last year it is what it is. Conversations will go on and I met Tom [Fox] yesterday and he seems a good guy and things, I’m sure, will happen pretty soon.”
