SYDNEY, Australia- The Kenya Sevens rugby team, Shujaa, lost 7-5 to Argentina in their opening match of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series encounter in Sydney, Australia.

After a cagey first half characterized by determined defensive displays from both sides, Gaston Revol rushed between the sticks to gift Argentina their first and only try of the game.

The conversion was successful ensuring Argentina went into the interval leading the Kenyans 7-0.

Shujaa came back determined in the second half with substitute Andrew Amonde gifting the Kenyans a try at the corner of the Argentina’s white-wash.

The sticks however, denied Samuel Oliech the extras with the kicker seeing his effort ricochet off the upright.

Half-century Points

A quick restart offered Eric Ombasa chance to kill off the game when the towering player kicked the ball deep into Argentina’s territory before a well-timed tackle stopped him in his heels.

Argentina held-on to their two points lead running down the clock on Shujaa who completed various passes but were unable to break the Argentinian defense.

South Africa, New Zealand and Australia reigned supreme by close of business in Sydney after eight men’s matches started the third leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

In Pool C defending series champions Blitzboks racked up half-century points against Papua New Guinea.

New Zealand were in a clinical mood against Russia and ran in nine tries in Pool A whilst Fiji prevailed over Samoa.

The other Pool C clash saw England start their campaign with a 22-10 victory and both France and Argentina opened their accounts with victories in Pool B.

Australia and the USA were involved in the toughest tussle of day one with the hosts prevailing 26-19 thanks to Tim Anstee’s length-of-the-field try and Scotland finished the day on a high note with a 52-2 victory over Canada.

Shujaa are in Pool B and will play France on Saturday at 7.35 A.M followed by a 10.36 A.M match against Wales.
