KU VULTURES SHOCK STRATHMORE.
Kenyatta University Vultures upset two time league champions Strathmore University Gladiators 4-0 in a Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) men’s premier league match played at City Park Stadium.
Shadrack Ruto gave Vultures a 2-0 lead in the first half with two beautiful goals and Kelvin Barasa added two more goals after the break as Vultures got the better of their university counterparts.
Ruto sounded the board on 22 minutes with a beauty. The striker left Strathmore defender Derrick Kuloba for dead before firing in between the legs of Strathmore keeper Simon Odhiambo.
Five minutes later, he scored his second after flicking the ball past Odhiambo from a penalty corner. The score line prompted Strathmore coach Meshack Senge to come on but his team struggled to create any chances.
Odhiambo was replaced by John Wekesa at half time and the latter fared no better as he also conceded twice in six minutes.
It completed a good result for Vultures who had on Saturday beat Mombasa Sports Club 1-0 as their coach Walter Onyango got the better of his younger brother Senge of Strathmore in the university derby.
“The two first half goals stunned them and gave us cushion going into the break. Our plan was to have the ball in their half and this worked well for us,” Onyango said.
All matches were preceded by a minute silence in honour of both Onyango and Senge’s father who passed away on Saturday.
“It was a bad day in the office for my team; we were lackluster and paid the price. They (Vultures) wanted it more than us and we can have few complaints about the result,” Senge said.
