Kenya karate team saddened by championship omission
Lack of finances will see the Kenya national Karate team miss out on World Championships for the second time in a row. This year’s edition will take place in Austria between October 25 and 30, but Kenya will not be represented as the team failed to secure funding for the trip.
The team has been in camp since January and head coach Bonn Owiti says it is disappointing for the players not to participate in the event.
“These young boys and girls have been hard at work preparing for the championships and it is unfortunate that they will not get to showcase their talent on a global stage,” said Owiti.
The Kenyan team failed to take part in the 2015 championship held in Germany for similar reasons and this year, they had hoped that the Sports Ministry would have made provisions for them-but this was not to be.
Karate will for the first time be included in the Olympics at the 2020 Games in Tokyo Japan, and coach Owiti believes his team will take part.
“We have a young team that we are training for the Olympics and we are confident that they will compete well,” said Owiti.
