
Over 50 countries have confirmed their participation in the forthcoming World Scrabble players Association Championship that will be held in Nairobi, Kenya early November 2017.
This will be the first time for the global event to be held in Africa since its inception in 1991. Sport Kenya Director General Gordon Oluoch who officially launched the tournament said by hosting the global event, Kenya will be able to market its tourist attraction and showcase Kenya as a safe country.
He assured Scrabble Kenya (SK) that the Government through Sport Kenya will support the hosting of the global event.
“Our mandate at Sport Kenya is to develop sports from the grassroot to International Level. I wish to assure you that the Government will support you to organize a high class event. I know a lot will be involved especially providing security and transport. This event will add more value especially as a tourist attraction and serve as a great platform to showcase Kenya as a safe country.”
“I’m urging Scrabble Kenya to prepare adequately for best results in the tournament. Kenya is ranked second and we must uphold that performance and go for the top position. Im happy Scrabble and Chess events are coming up very well and its my wish you will be at par with Athletics, Rugby and Volleyball,” observed Oluoch.
Scrabble Kenya Chairman Elliud Lel who was flanked by his secretary General Eva Njogu and Kenya’s highly ranked player Gitonga Nderitu said “We are proud as scrabble Kenya to be part of the country’s vision and mission, in transforming our country into a competitive global brand and fostering national pride, patriotism and earning global recognition. We are convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the benefit of hosting this event are overwhelming. It will promote and foster cohesion among participating countries.”
