Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Borussia Dortmund star Henrikh Mkhitaryan after tabling an improved bid for the Armenia international, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Red Devils’ latest offer is for £28m plus add-ons, the report claims. Dortmund are thought to value the 27-year-old, who is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract, at £31m.
United’s opening bid of £19m fell well short of that, but they have quickly returned with a bigger fee on the table.
Attacking midfielder Mkhitaryan, who scored 23 goals and set up another 32 last season for Dortmund last season, is refusing to sign a new deal at Signal Iduna Park. Dortmund have previously indicated that they would prefer to force the player to see out the final year of his contract and leave on a free transfer next summer than sell now.
But sources close to the negotiations have told the Mirror that United are now increasingly confident of being able to bring one of new manager Jose Mourinho top summer transfer targets to Old Trafford.
